Gas Geyser or an Electric Geyser ? Which is Better?

Gas geysers or electric geysers; this has always been a topic of debate. However, both type of geysers gets the job done. But which one should you buy? Well, today, you’re finally getting an answer.

This article has the information you need regarding gas and electric geysers. You’ll find how do they work, what are the pros and cons etc. If you’re intrigued to know which one is better, read this article in full.

What are Electric Geysers? And types?

An electric geyser is an electric water heater that uses an electric current for heating water. It’s a tank kind of a structure that has two pipes.

One is for an inlet of cold water, and the other one serves as an outlet of hot water. There is a heating component that heats the water and is controlled using a thermostat.

There are two types of electric geysers. Here are the types: –

two types of electric geysers

Instant Geysers: Instant geysers, as the name suggests, it provides hot water instantly. This means you can turn it on whenever you need hot water. However, you cannot store water in these kinds of geysers.

Storage Geysers: Storage geysers are usually big in size. Such geysers work similar to instant geysers but can store water depending on how big your geyser is. You can choose geysers with a capacity ranging from 3L-25-L.

How Does an Electric Geyser Work?

The electric geyser works on a simple principle that converts electric energy into heat energy. It’s just like the immersion rod but is more advanced and automated.

When you turn on the geyser, the current gets converted into heat energy. The water then passes through rods adsorbing the heat energy and becomes hot. The thermostat within the geyser helps in keeping the water temperature below the set limit. Your thermostat must work fine. Or, you might burn your skin.

Pros & Cons of Electric Geysers/Water Heaters

Pros:

  • Electric geysers are more reliable
  • They have a longer lifespan than gas geysers
  • You can install it anywhere as only a switch is required
  • Very safe in terms of usage
  • Easy to operate

Cons:

  • Electricity is required if you want to run this geyser
  • It is not cost-efficient
  • Water doesn’t remain hot for too long

What Are Gas Geysers? And types?

Gas geysers are counterparts of electric geysers. As the name suggests, gas geysers operate using LPG or propane to heat water. It means you either need a gas line or a gas cylinder to operate a gas geyser.

Similar to electric geysers, gas geysers are also of two types: –

Gas Geysers And types

  • Instant Gas Geyser: Usually, gas geysers are instant. It means there are no storage tanks with the geyser. And you can turn on the geyser whenever you need hot water.
  • Storage gas geysers: Suited for large families, storage geysers have a storage tank. So, you need to heat the water once, and then other family members can use it.

How Does A Gas Geyser Work?

When you open the tap linked with the gas geyser, a flame is ignited. Usually, there’s a click sound indicating the same. There are water pipes in the heat exchanger covered with metal fins. When you start the flame, these fins heat up and heat the pipes in turn.

And when water runs through these pipes, it turns hot as well. The system is quite instant as soon as you turn the tap on and start the flame, hot water starts pouring from the tap.

Pros & Cons of Gas Geysers/Water Heaters

Pros:

  • Gas geysers are more energy efficient as they use gas instead of electricity
  • Gas geysers have a better heating capacity
  • You can buy them cheap
  • It takes less time for a gas geyser to heat water
  • Good for small families
  • Requires less maintenance
  • You can reduce the heat and thus lower the temperature

Cons

  • Such geysers do not have a long life
  • It is quite hard to install
  • You need a fresh cylinder to make this work
  • It’s not safe as LPG is inflammable
  • It’s not environment friendly
  • The maintenance is quite high, and you need to clean it each year.

Electric Geyser or Gas Geyser: Which One is Safer?

The best answer is electric geysers. And there’s nothing to argue about. It is because, even if an electric geyser misbehaves, the geyser might short circuit. In case of gas geysers, if there’s a leak in the LPG cylinder, it can lead to an explosion.

Also, if you use a gas geyser, chemicals start to sediment at the bottom. And this can corrode the bottom, leading to leakage. It’s the reason why electric geyser wins the game.

Conclusion

Both electric and gas geysers are good if you take the necessary precautions. If you have a very large family of adults, a gas geyser is good. It’s because a gas geyser is fast and can heat a large amount of water within no time. Also, if adults handle it, there’s no chance of a mishap.

However, if you have kids and a small family, an electric geyser is preferred. It is quite compact and can be mounted on the wall. It’s very safe for your kids and requires negligible maintenance overuse. If you find the above insights useful, please share them with others.
